    THE VOLATILE HAPPENINGS AT THE VENICE BIENNALE ART FESTIVAL HAVE VIRTUALLY ENDED, AND VISITORS HAVE RETURNED THEIR ATTENTION TO THE EXHIBITS - ON SHOW IN 35 NATIONAL PAVILIONS. AVANT-GARDE SCULPTURE PROVIDED BEST VIEWING, ALTHOUGH CRITICS HAVE AGREED THAT THE FESTIVAL AS A WHOLE LACK ITS USUAL EXCITEMENT THIS YEAR.

    THE BIENNALE WAS RENT IN ITS OPENING DAYS BY DEMONSTRATORS COMPLAINING AGAINST THE "BOURGEOIS" NATURE OF THE FESTIVAL, AND POLICE HAD TO BE CALLED IN TO KEEP THE PEACE. BUT IN THE PAST FEW DAYS THE STUDENTS AND ARTISTS WHO HAD PREVIOUSLY CLASHED WITH POLICE HAVE CEASED THEIR AGITATIONS.

    THE SOVIET PAVILION CLOSED FOR SEVERAL DAYS IN PROTEST AGAINST THE PRESENCE OF POLICE AT THE FESTIVAL, BUT HAS SINCE RE-OPENED. SOVIET ARTISTS MARIAM ASLAMASIAN AND ARCADIJ PLASTOV HAVE DROWN CONSIDERABLE CRITICAL ATTENTION.

    BOTH THE GERMAN AND BRITISH PAVILIONS HAVE GOOD REPRESENTATIVE SCULPTURES. PHILIP KING'S VISIONISTIC SHAPES ARE A FEATURE OF THE BRITISH PAVILION.

    ARMAN OF FRANCE INTRODUCED A WITTY NOTE WITH "CHOPIN'S WATERLOO", A LUMPY COLLAGE INVOLVING PIECES OF PIANO AND OTHER LESS IDENTIFIABLE ITEMS.

    RED GROOM OF THE UNITED STATES CONTRIBUTED "CHICAGO CITY", A HIGHLY TANGIBLE EXPRESSION OF CLAUSTROPHOBIC, BIG-CITY LIVING.
