    TWO OF THEM, WERNER BITTNER, THE 23-YEAR-OLD LEADER OF THE GERMAN PARTY, AND HILTI VON ALLMEN, A SWISS GUIDE, WERE FROSTBITTEN DURING THE CLIMB.BITTNER HAD BOTH FEET FROSTBITTEN AND VON ALLMEN, BOTH HANDS.

    VON ALLMEN AND HIS SWISS PARTNER, PAUL ETTER, 23, THE FIRST UP THE MOUNTAIN, REACHED THE SUMMIT ON THE AFTERNOON OF FEB 4 AFTER 4 TWO-DAY ASCENT.THEY WENT DOWN TO THE SOLVAY HUT - 13,100 FEET.

    STILL ABOUT SIX-HUNDRED FEET FROM THE TOP WHEN A STORM BROKE THAT DAY WERE TWO AUSTRALIANS - ERICH KREMPKE, 27, AND LEO SCHLOEMMER, 26.THEY WERE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE GERMANS: PETER SIEGERT, 25, RAINER KAUSCHE, 23, AND BITTNER.

    DESPITE APPALLING WEATHER THEY STAYED ON THE FACE OF THE WALL THAT NIGHT.THEY CONTINUED THEIR CLIMB IN A BLIZZARD NEXT MORNING AND REACHED THE SUMMIT SOON AFTER MIDDAY.THEY JOINED THE OTHERS IN THE HUT BY EVENING AFTER SPENDING THREE DAYS AND TWO NIGHTS ON THE FACE IN TEMPERATURES WELL BELOW ZERO.

    ORIGINALLY THE ALPINISTS HAD SET OUT IN THREE PARTIES - THE SWISS, THE THREE GERMANS AND THE TWO AUSTRALIANS.
