    THIS IS ONE OF THE FEW FILMS OF LIFE ABOARD A POLARIS SUBMARINE THAT HAS BEEN RELEASED FOR PUBLIC VIEWING.IT WAS TAKEN ABOARD THE UNITED STATES SUBMARINE, 'GEORGE WASHINGTON,' DURING A RECENT TOUR OF DUTY IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC.

    IT IS DESCRIBED OFFICIALLY AS A FLEET BALLISTIC MISSILE SUBMARINE AND IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PARTS OF THE AMERICAN NUCLEAR DEFENCE.

    'GEORGE WASHINGTON' IS NUCLEAR POWERED AND WAS THE FIRST SUBMARINE TO BE EQUIPPED WITH THE POLARIS MISSILES.THEY ARE KEPT CONSTANTLY AT THE READY TO BE FIRED ON TARGETS UP TO 1200 MILES AWAY.THE SUBMARINE STAYS UNDER WATER FOR SIXTY DAYS, HIDDEN FROM ENEMY EYES AND SAFE FROM POSSIBLE ENEMY ATTACK.

    DESPITE THE LONG PERIODS OF DUTY UNDER WATER, THE MORALE OF THE CREW IS HIGH.THEY ARE KEPT ACTIVE AND ARE PROVIDED WITH GOOD FACILITIES FOR RECREATION, DESPITE THE CRAMPED CONDITIONS OF LIFE IN A SUBMARINE.

    ALL THE TIME THEY ARE AT SEA, THE SUBMARINE COMMANDER IS KEPT IN TOUCH BY LONG WAVE RADIO WITH NAVAL SHORE BASE.WHEN THE SIXTY-DAY PATROL IS COMPLETED AND THE SUBMARINE SURFACES, THE CREW PREPARE FOR THEIR SHORE LEAVE -- 30 DAYS FOR EVERY SIXTY DAYS UNDER WATER.

    THE MEN WHO MAN THE SUBMARINE ARE AMONG THE MOST HIGHLY TRAINED MEMBERS OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY.
