    KING MAHENDRA OF NEPAL OPENED A TANNERY BUILT UNDER A CHINESE GOVERNMENT AID SCHEME ON WEDNESDAY. BUILT IN KATMANDU, THE PROJECT COST GBP30,000 AND AFTER THE OPENING KING MAHENDRA WAS TAKEN ON A TOUR OF INSPECTION.

    WORK ON THE TANNERY HAS GONE MORE SLOWLY THAN PLANNED, AND THE OPENING DATE WAS POSTPONED. BUT NOW THE CHINESE TECHNICIANS ARE FORECASTING PRODUCTION TARGETS OF 30,000 PAIRS OF SHOES A YEAR TOGETHER WITH THE TANNING OF 20,000 HIDES.

    CHINA HAS AGREED TO PROVIDE NEPAL WITH GBP10 MILLION IN DEVELOPMENT AID, AND MAY EVEN HAVE EXTENDED THIS FOLLOWING A VISIT IN APRIL TO KATMANDU BY MARSHAL CHEN YI, THE CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTER. DURING HIS STAY THE MARSHAL PRAISED NEPAL FOR BEING TRULY NON-ALIGNED IN INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS.
