  • Description

When news of the American landings in the Lebanon reached the East German Communist Congress in East Berlin, delegates whistled
and stamped their feet in disapproval.

Thousands of people marched round the stadium, chanting slogans and shouting abuse about the Americans. There were several Arab delegates at the meeting, and one from Syria said that the Arab world would not stand with arms folded and declared that there were friends of the Arabs in the Socialist camp.

During the course of this Party Rally, a contingent of the East German Defence forces marched into the arena to prolonged cheers and clapping by the delegates.
