Background: United States President Jimmy Carter arrived in Iran on Saturday (31 December) to a warm welcome from the Shah and high ranking Government officials. The President, who's on the second leg of his six nation tour, said he's come to discuss economic and energy problems.
SYNOPSIS: The President is travelling with his wife Rosalynn on his most ambitious overseas trip since taking office. They were greeted at Mehrabad Airport by the Shah of Iran and Empress Farah.
Also on hand to welcome the president were Iran's Prime Minister, Jamshid Amouzegar, Foreign Minister Abbas Ali Kalatbari and the country's Ambassador to Washington, Ardeshir Zahedi. But while the welcome was in progress at the airport, two anti-American demonstrations were staged in other parts of the city -- one in front of the U.S. Embassy, the other opposite the Iran-U.S. Agro Company.
However there was not hint of trouble at the airport as officials and guests took part in a 35 minute ceremony. Speaking first, the Shah said he cherished the President's arrival as the head of country with which Iran had unshakable bonds and the best of relations.
