  • Description

Northern Ireland Prime Minister James Chichester-Clark flew to London today (Monday) for an urgent meeting with British Home Secretary Reginald Maudling, after almost a week of violence on the streets of Belfast, the province's capital.

Major Chichester-Clark said last night (Sunday) that he would discuss how to tackle the problem of violence and said: "Security forces must take whatever further measures may be needed to deal firmly with the situation."
The past week's violence, stemming from friction between Catholics and Protestants in Belfast, has been mainly directed at the army peace-keeping force. British troops have faced petrol-bombs, bullets, even arrows.

Major Chichester-Clark has cancelled a ten-day visit he was to have made to the United States because of the continuing disturbances.
