  • Description

A VIOLENT EXPLOSION SEVERELY DAMAGED THE OFFICES OF THE GAULLIST U.N.R. PARTY IN MARSEILLES LAST NIGHT (THURSDAY). NO ONE WAS INJURED, BUT EXTENSIVE DAMAGE WAS DONE TO THE PARTY OFFICES, AND WINDOWS IN NEARBY HOUSES AND OFFICES WERE BLOWN IN.

POLICE REPORTED THIS MORNING THAT A PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION SHOWED THAT A CHARGE HAD BEEN PLACED INSIDE THE BUILDING, NEAR THE U.N.R. OFFICE.

TWO YOUNG STUDENTS TAKING AROUND PARTY POSTERS FOR SUNDAY'S MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS TOLD POLICE THAT THEY SAW A MAN RUN FROM THE BUILDING, JUST BEFORE THE BLAST, AND DRIVE OFF IN A CAR.

(MARSEILLES IS LIKELY TO BE THE FOCAL POINT OF INTEREST IN SUNDAY'S ELECTIONS THROUGHOUT FRANCE. M. GASTON DEFFERRE, THE SOCIALIST MAYOR OF MARSEILLES AND THE MAIN LEFT-WING CANDIDATE FOR DECEMBER'S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, IS FIGHTING WHAT APPEARS TO BE A LOSING BATTLE AGAINST GAULLISTS, COMMUNISTS AND AN INDEPENDENT FOR THE OFFICE OF MAYOR.
