  • Description

News of another Dutch ship launching: this time at Rotterdam May 30, with Queen Juliana naming a liner 'Koningin Wilhelmina', after her mother.

The 6000-ton vessel, to carry 1600 passengers, is expected to be in service on the hook of Holland - Harwich route by the end of the year. Owned by the Seeland Steamship Company, she will replace the Company's 'Mecklenburg', which has been in service since 1922.

Unusual feature of the launching: because of the narrowness of the hull, designed for high speeds, air tanks were attached to the stern, near the propellers, to prevent the vessel from diving too deeply into the water on leaving slipway.
