Background: The Air Force began using women as Security Police in 1970. Since then, the women have held jobs in administration, law enforcement and traffic control. The tougher and more dangerous jobs were left to the men. Until now..... (kaboom-kapow) (open sound here)
The Air force has begun an experimental program, training women to defend U-S Air Force bases from enemy attacks. The training includes use of heavy automatic weapons.......
And combat field exercises right out of the army training manual 100 women will go through the four week course, learning combat tactics and how to defend strategic installations like missile launch silos nuclear bomb storage areas, and B-52 bomber bases.
Air Force officers say this is part of an effort to have women participate in all phase of military life.
They are fully integrated.
In Texas, the air force is trying to find out if women can be used in combat.
This report from George Lewis.
As for the women, most of them don't seem to mind combat training at all...
Some of the training deals with special threats like terrorist attacks...a growing concern at US military bases.
These men are .... simulating an attack on a US installation.
A war game .... a game in which the bad guys always lose.
Soon the games will be over and the 100 women in the program will be sent to US and overseas base for a year.
The air force will not speculate on whether the women will ever have to fire their weapons at anyone...but will be watching them closely to see if women do have a place in combat.
