    Background: A RECEPTION WAS HELD IN HONOUR OF EARL MOUNTBATTEN, BRITAIN'S CHIEF OF DEFENCE STAFF, WHO IS VISITING BRITISH ARMED FORCES UNITS IN SARAWAK.THE RECEPTION, HELD IN KUCHING ON SUNDAY (14 FEB), WAS GIVEN BY THE SARAWAK GOVERNOR, TUN ABANG HAJI OPENG AT HIS RESIDENCY -- THE OLD GOVERNMENT HOUSE, WHICH WAS BUILT IN 1870.

    THE RECEPTION WAS ATTENDED BY EARL MOUNTBATTEN'S DAUGHTER, LADY BRABOURNE, THE SARAWAK CHIEF MINISTER, MR.STEPHEN KALONG NINGKAN AND HIS WIFE, SARAWAK GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND MANY PRIVATE BRITISH CITIZENS.

    YESTERDAY (MONDAY), EARL MOUNTBATTEN FLEW IN A HELICOPTER TO THE KUCHING AIRPORT WHERE HE WAS ARRIVAL BY HIGH RANKING ROYAL AIR FORCE PERSONNEL.ROYAL AIR FORCE PLANES ARE NOW BASED AT THIS AIRPORT.IN THE OPERATIONS ROOM, HE WAS BRIEFED ON THE LATEST BORNEO BORDER SITUATION.

    ACCOMPANIED BY GENERAL W.C.WALKER, DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS IN BORNEO AND ADMIRAL SIR VARYL BEGG, BRITISH COMMANDER IN CHIEF AT THE FAR EAST, EARL MOUNTBATTEN THEN INSPECTED THE ARMY RECONNAISSANCE PARKED ON THE APRON.

    AFTERWARDS, HE DROVE TO THE BRITISH NAVAL BASE WHERE HE MET SEVERAL RATINGS AND OFFICERS.SIR VARYL WAS ALSO PRESENT.THE TOUR ALSO TOOK EARL MOUNTBATTEN ABOARD THE AUSTRALIAN MINESWEEPER, "IBIS" WHICH HAVE JOINED BRITISH NAVAL SHIPS IN PATROLLING THE SARAWAK TERRITORIAL WATERS AGAINST INDONESIAN INCURSIONS.
