The new Iranian government headed by Dr. Mehdi Bazargan has been recognised by the U.S.S.R., Britain and a number of other European nations. The United States has offered to co-operate with Dr. Bazargan. Meanwhile the Ayotollah Khomeini has used radio and television broadcasts to try to bring calm to Teheran, where more than seven hundred people are believed to have been killed in the weekend overthrow of Dr. Bakhtiar's government. Dr. Bakhtiar is reported to have been arrested and may stand trial for alleged crimes against the state.
SYNOPSIS: The armed forces didn't fight Khomeini's supporters. A senior air force officer explained why.
Over the weekend and on Monday (12 February) Teheran was a city in chaos. Armed civilian supporters of the Ayotollah Khomeini ran through the streets of the capital brandishing their weapons. With the withdrawal of the army to barracks and the consequent disintegration of Dr. Bakhtair's government there was nothing to stop the rebels, shooting wildly, looting and burning. Army depots and police stations were raided for weapons. And foreign embassies and big hotels were ransacked. The Shah of Iran's two palaces were taken over by the street mobs. Only the Imperial Guard, the troops most loyal to the Shah made any effort to fight back from their barracks in north Teheran. The mobs took the Majlis, the Lower House of Parliament in just two hours.
As if to demonstrate the decadence of the country's parliament, alcohol and pornographic material allegedly found in the Majlis was displayed for cameramen.
