M. Jacques Soustelle, former French governor-general of Algeria, and eight months ago sacked as a Minister by President de Gaulle, gave a news conference in Paris Oct 19 to launch a nation-wide attack against the Government's policy.
M. Soustelle, for more than a year a leading opponent in France of self-determination for Algeria called for a new effort in favour of Algerie francaise. He spoke in the same Paris hotel where de Gaulle gave his press conference May 19 1958 to announce his willingness to be head of the French Government - of the fifth Republic.
M. Soustelle went on to propose a broad programme of social reform and economic expansion and appealed to Frenchmen who shared his views to get together-as a means of criticising many aspects of the Government's policy-first on a regional and later a national basis.
Such gatherings in France would become, he hoped, a new political movement to be called national Regroupment whose ultimate aim would be either to convert those in power to its view, or else to replace them by legal means.
