Background: The rain-swollen river Arno receded today 24th after a long night of fear in Florence which was devastated by floods in November 1966.
Light burned all night in quarters facing the Arno as police and firemen were alerted against possible flooding.
Goldsmiths on the famous ponte Vecchio (old bridge) hauled away their precious jewels and lorries transported goods from shops near the river to higher points in the city.
Thousands of florentines spent a sleepless night watching the raging Arno including inching towards the danger level.
But the torriential rain which lashed Florence, Grosseto and Pisa for two days stopped just before dawn and the alert was lefted towards midday as the waters receded.
