    HURRICANE CAMILLE, DESCRIBED AS THE MOST DANGEROUS IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, BROUGHT HAVOC TO THREE SOUTHERN STATES YESTERDAY (SUNDAY). LATEST REPORTS PUT THE DISASTER TOLL AT 15 DEAD AND HUNDREDS INJURED. DAMAGE RUNS INTO MILLIONS OF DOLLARS.

    AT LEAST 70,000 PEOPLE EVACUATED HOMES IN LOW LYING COASTAL AREAS OF LOUISIANA, MISSISSIPPI AND ALABAMA. THEY TOOK REFUGE IN EMERGENCY CENTRES SET UP INLAND. MASS EVACUATION UNDOUBTEDLY OUT THE NUMBER OF CASUALTIES.

    THE HURRICANE CAUSED WIDESPREAD POWER FAILURES AND DOZENS OF COMMUNITIES WERE LEFT WITHOUT ELECTRICITY OR WATER. SEVERAL MAJOR FIRES WERE REPORTED TO BE RAGING UNCJECKED IN COASTAL REGIONS, WHIPPED ON BY WINDS OF UP TO 200 M.P.H. (320 KM).

    THE WINDS ALSO CAUSED WIDESPREAD FLOODING. GIANT WAVES DEMOLISHED A SECTION OF WATERFRONT AT BAY ST. LOUIS, MISSISSIPPI -- THE CITY WAS LATER REPORTED UNDER MARTIAL LAW.

    TWO OF THE WORST HIT TOWNS WERE GULFPORT AND BILOXI, ALSO IN MISSISSIPPI, WHERE AT LEAST 12 PEOPLE DIED. THE TOWNS WERE DESCRIBED AS "A TANGLE OF WRECKAGE", AND BOTH WERE DECLARED DISASTER AREAS. IN BILOXI ALONE, THE MAYOR ESTIMATED THE DAMAGE AT OVER 10 MILLION DOLLARS (ABOUT 4.16 MILLION STERLING).
