Background: The Ford GT 70, a two-seater sports prototype developed over the past year with the help of the Finnish driver Hannu Mikkola, will make its debut at the Brussels Motor Show tomorrow (Tuesday, January 19). The car is a direct descendant of the GT 40, the line of GT cars which won the Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race for four years in succession.

The new mid-engined car is scheduled to make its competition debut in international rallies later this year. In its present stage of development it will reach a top speed of 120 m.p.h. (193 k.p.h.) but in its ultimate form it should be capable of 180 m.p.h. (290 k.p.h.).

The engine, placed behind the driver but ahead of the rear axle, is the 2.6 litre V6 power unit already used in the Capri 260 GT and Ford 26M. A 5.45 litre fuel tank gives the car a range of not less than 250 miles (400km).

At present no decision has been made on whether to produce the car in road form for sale to the public. This depends on further development in competition and also on the reaction of the motoring public.

Mr Stuart Turner, Director of Motor Sport for Ford of Europe, said it is hoped to make a decision about volume sales to the public in about two months' time.
