  • Description

MEXICAN PEDRO RODRIGUEZ SCORED HIS SECOND SUCCESSIVE TRIUMPH IN THE 1970 WORLD SPORTS CAR SERIES WHEN HE DROVE A PORSCHE 917 TO VICTORY IN THE MONZA 1,000 KILOMETRES RACE TODAY (SATURDAY). A PLUCKY PERFORMANCE BY ITALIANS IGNAZIO GIUNTI AND NINO VACCARELLA TOOK THEM TO SECOND PLACE - DESPITE A FIRE IN THEIR FERRARI 512S.

THE VICTORY OF RODRIGUEZ AND HIS FINNISH CO-DRIVER LEO KINNUNEN CONSOLIDATED PORSCHE'S POINTS LEAD IN THE WORLD TABLE OVER THE FERRARIS. TODAY' RACE WAS THE FOURTH LEG OF THE WORLD SPORTS CAR SERIES.

RODRIGUEZ, WHO EARLIER THIS MONTH WON THE THIRD LEG OF THE SERIES ON THE ENGLISH BRANDS HATCH CIRCUIT, CLOCKED A WINNING TIME OF FOUR HOURS 18 MINUTES 1.7 SECONDS AT MONZA - 64 SECOND FASTER THAN GIUNTI'S FERRARI.

ANOTHER FERRARI 512s DRIVEN BY FORMER WORLD DRIVERS CHAMPION JOHN SURTEES OF BRITAIN AND BY PETER SCHETTI OF SWITZERLAND, FINISHED THIRD. SURTEES WAS DRIVING IN PLACE OF BELGIAN JACKIE LCKX, WHO WAS INJURED IN LAST WEEK'S SPANISH FORMULA ONE GRAND PRIX.

SYNOPSIS: FORTY ENTRIES MADE UP THE FIELD IN THE THOUSAND KILOMETRES RACE AT THE ITALIAN MONZA CIRCUIT ON SATURDAY.

BRITAIN'S FORMER WORLD DRIVERS CHAMPION, JOHN SURTEES, WAS COMPETING IN PLACE OF BELGIAN JACKIE ICKX, INJURED IN SPAIN LAST WEEK.

JO SIFFERT, WITH FASTEST PRACTICE TIME IN HIS PORSCHE, TOOK POLE POSITION ON THE STARTING GRID.

PORSCHES AND FERRARIS LOOKED SET TO DOMINATE THE RACE FROM THE START, TAKING NINE OF THE FIRST TEN PLACES ON THE GRID, AND CONTINUING THEIR DUEL FOR LEADERSHIP IN THE 1970 WORLD SPORTS CAR SERIES. SWITZERLAND'S SIFFERT, DRIVING A PORSCHE NINE-SEVENTEEN WITH A NEW TWELVE-CYLINDER ENGINE, TOOK THE INITIAL LEAD BUT WAS OVER-TAKEN IN ONLY THE SECOND LAP BY THE FERRARI OF ITALIANS GIUNTI AND VACCARELLA.

THE PORSCHE OF MEXICAN PEDRO RODRIGUEZ MOVED INTO SECOND PLACE. RODRIGUES, WITH FINNISH CO-DRIVER LEO KINNUMEN, WAS LOOKING FOR HIS SECOND SUCCESSIVE VICTORY IN THE SPORTS CAR SERIES AFTER HIS WIN ON THE ENGLISH BRANDS HATCH CIRCUIT EARLIER THIS MONTH HE MOVED INTO THE LEAD IN THE SEVENTY-SECOND LAP.

THE FERRARI OF GIUNTI AND VACCARELLA WAS OVERHEATING BADLY AND THEY WERE FORCED INTO THE PITS. BUT THEY RETURNED TO THE RACE TO TAKE SECOND PLACE.

THIS GAVE RODRIGUEZ A CHANGE TO CONSOLIDATE HIS POSITION. CLOCKING AN AVERAGE SPEED OR OVER A HUNDRED AND FORTY-FOUR MILES AN HOUR (TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY-ONE KILOMETRES AND HOUR), RODRIGUEZ WENT ON TO RECORD A COMFORTABLE VICTORY. HIS WINNING TIME OF FOUR HOURS EIGHTEEN MINUTES ONE-POINT-SEVEN SECONDS WAS SIXTY-FOUR SECONDS FASTER THAN GIUNTI'S FERRARI. THE FERRARI OF SURTEES AND PETER SCHETTI OF SWITZERLAND WAS THIRD. THE WIN BY RODRIGUEZ CONSOLIDATED PORSCHE'S POINTS LEAD OVER THE FERRARIS IN THE WORLD SERIES.
