  • Description

ROME UNIVERSITY STUDENTS WERE TODAY (FRIDAY) PLANNING FURTHER DEMONSTRATIONS FOR UNIVERSITY REFORM AND AGAINST THEIR FORCIBLE EJECTION BY POLICE FROM FACULTY BUILDINGS YESTERDAY.

A FORCE OF 2,000 POLICE AND CARABINIERE GUARDED THE UNIVERSITY COMPLEX, FINALLY CLOSED DOWN AFTER BEING CLEARED OF HUNDRED OF STUDENTS WHO HAD BARRICADED THEMSELVES IN, SOME FOR NEARLY THREE WEEKS, BRINGING LECTURES AND STUDIES TO A STANDSTILL.

A TOTAL OF 13 PEOPLE, INCLUDING STUDENTS, POLICE AND PASSER-BY, WERE INJURED AND 75 STUDENTS WERE DETAINED AFTER FIGHTS WITH POLICE IN THE STREETS AND UNIVERSITY BUILDINGS. THE STUDENTS WERE LATER RELEASED.

THE POLICE HAD OUT THROUGH CHAINS AND BROKEN DOWN BARRICADE BLOCKING UNIVERSITY ENTRANCES TO HERD THE STUDENTS OUT. THOSE WHO REFUSED WERE FORCIBLY DRAGGED AWAY.

ITALIAN UNIVERSITIES HAVE A TRADITIONAL RIGHT OF SANCTUARY, BUT IN THIS CASE THE RECTOR, PIETRO DAVACK, HAD CALLED THE POLICE IN AS THE SITUATION WAS FELT TO BE OUT OF HAND.

SIMILAR DEMONSTRATIONS ARE IN PROGRESS AT TRIESTS, TUBIAN, FLORENCE, CATANIA AND PALERMO, BUT THERE HAVE BEEN NO REPORTS OF CLASHES FROM ANY OF THESE FACULTIES.
