  • Description

THE BANNSIDE BY-ELECTION IN NORTHERN IRELAND, NECESSITATED BY THE ELEVATION TO THE PEERAGE OF ITS REPRESENTATIVE, THE FORMER CAPTAIN O'NEIL, RESULTED IN A WIN TODAY (THURSDAY 16TH) TO THE REVEREND IAN PAISLEY THE INDEPENDENT UNIONIST CANDIDATE AND LEADER OF NORTHERN IRELAND'S MILITANT PROTESTANTS. HIS WINNING MAJORITY WAS 1203 VOTES.

EARLY POLLING WAS HEAVY IN THE RURAL DISTRICT, AND MR. PAISLEY IS CAMPAIGN VEHICLES WERE TO BE SEEN OUTSIDE MANY POLLING BOOTHS.

AT ONE STAGE HIS ODDS APPEARED LESS AS THE OFFICIAL UNIONIST CAMPAIGN ORGANISED A LARGE LAST-MOMENT TURNOUT OF SUPPORTERS. AS VOTING PROCEEDED MR. PAISLEY COMPLAINED THAT HIS AGENTS WERE NOT BEING ALLOWED TO REPRESENT HIM AT ONE OF THE POLLING STATIONS, AND THREATENED TO BLOCK THE WAY TO THE STATION IF THE SITUATION WASN'T REMEDIED. ELECTORAL OFFICER WILLIAM HENDERSON THEN WARNED THAT BLOCKING ACCESS COULD LEAD TO ARRESTS.

IN THE BY-ELECTION MR. PAISLEY DEFEATED DR. BOLTON MINFORD, THE RULING UNIONIST PARTY'S CANDIDATE, AND LABOUR REPRESENTATIVE PATRICK MCHUGH. A SIMILAR CONTEST WAS ALSO FOUGHT TODAY (THURSDAY) IN THE SOUTH ANTRIM CONSTITUENCY WHERE ANOTHER EXTREMIST PROTESTANT WAS SUCCESSFUL.
