  • Description

Floods have cut off many remote villages on Luzon Island in the Philippines and United States helicopters have been called on to fly in emergency supplies. The village of Poonbato, in Zambales Province, has been isolated since early August when a swollen river changed its course, washing out the only road.

Three typhoons prevented earlier attempts to bring relief supplies to the village, and wiped out a large part of the area's rice crop. This official film shows last months' operation, mounted to bring supplies to Poonbato. Two helicopters from the amphibious assault ship U.S.S. Okinawa, flew into Poonbato and two other villages with eight tons of rice, wheat, flour and CSM a high protein combination of corn meal, soy meal and powdered milk.

Some of the food was purchased by the local people, the rest was donated by U.S. AID, Catholic Relief Service and Project Handclasp.
