  • Description

More than 100,000 demonstrators marched through Paris on Tuesday, (19 November) in a vast, bet orderly, protest highlighting a day of nation-wide strikes against the Government's austerity programme.

The singing, banner-carrying protest clumn started at the Bastille Square, where the French Revolution erupted almost tow centuries ago. The procession blocked streets for more than two miles (three kms).

The nationwide stoppages touched all corners of French life, hitting public transport particularly hard.

The strike movement is almost certain to continue in various separate stoppages over the next few days because of a total deadlock between the Government and the unions.

The turmoil started more than a month ago when many post office workers began striking for more money and better working conditions. The lack of mail is having dire effects on French commarde and industry.

Garbage workers have also been on strike for a week, leaving piles of rubbish in the streets of Paris.

The national strike came exactly six months after the election of President Valery Giscard D'Estaing, whose Government's anti???nflation measure have been coming under severe pressore.
