  • Description

FIRE SWEPT THE THIKA JUTE MILLS FACTORY NEAR NAIROBI YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) DESTROYING PROPERTY VALUED AT ABOUT GBP250,000 STERLING AND INCLUDING 30,000 TONS OF PAKISTANI JUTE.

THE JUTE FACTORY -- ONE OF THE ONLY TWO IN KENYA -- CAUGHT FIRE IN THE EARLY HOURS OF YESTERDAY MORNING. FACTORY DIRECTOR, MR SOMEHAND SHAH, SAID A NIGHT WATCHMAN TELEPHONED POLICE WHEN HE NOTICED SMOKE AND FLAMES.

THE LOCAL FIRE BRIGADE AT THIKA WERE CALLED FIRST, BUT LATER APPLIANCES FROM NAIROBI WERE CALLED IN AS THE FIRE BECAME MORE DIFFICULT TO CONTAIN. A FIRE OFFICER SAID JUTE WAS ONE OF THE MOST HIGHLY COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS AND ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT TO PUT OUT ONCE ALIGHT.

HEAVY WINDS BLOWING ACROSS THE PLAINS MADE THE TASK OF THE FIREMEN MORE DIFFICULT, AND A PALL OF SMOKE HUNG OVER THE TOWNSHIP OF THIKA. ONE WAREHOUSE CRAMMED WITH SACKS OF JUTE AND OTHER RAW MATERIALS WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED.

THE FACTORY HAD BEEN IN PRODUCTION FOR MORE THAN A YEAR, AND THE FIRE MAY PUT ABOUT 100 WORKERS OUT OF A JOB UNTIL IT IS REBUILT.
