  • Description

Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) seized a 29-year old American on Thursday (7 January) on charges of spying for the Soviet Union.

The suspect is Robert Glenn Thompson, a self-employed fuel oil distributor who lives in the New York City suburb of Bay Shore.

He allegedly was recruited into the Soviet intelligence network in 1957 while serving with U.S. Air Force in Berlin. FBI director J. Edgar Hoover said Thompson conspired with Feodor Kudashkian, a Soviet national, to transmit American military secrets to the Soviet Union. Kudashkian was identified as a former employee of the United Nations Secretariat in New York City who is now living in the Soviet Union. The FBI accused Thompson of giving Kudashkian and other, unnamed individuals, information on military installations, missile sites, code books and intelligence activities. Thompson allegedly took part in Soviet espionage activities in the United States from December, 1958, when he was discharged after serving six years in the U.S. Air Force, until 1961. The FBI said Thompson was paid various sums of money for his alleged spying, and that he used a code name, fictitious identities, codes and secret writing to transmit information.

Thompson is married and has three children.
