    15,000 supporters of Portugal's Conservative Centre Democratic Party (CDS) attended a rally in Lisbon's bullring on Monday night (19 April).

    The main theme behind the rally was Portugal's lost "empire" -- referring particularly to the recent independence granted to Mozambique and Angola.

    Party speakers pledged support for refugees from both these former colonies supporters waved banners proclaiming that "overseas brothers support CDS".

    CDS leader Senhor Freitas do Amaral promised the crowd an economic revival, a return to law and order and a Christian society if his party were elected to power.

    General Galvao de Melo, an independent candidate, thanked the crowd for their support and said that all free people must fight against Communism through the polls.
