  • Description

The ancient sport of jousting - practised by the Romans, developed into something of an art by the medieval knights and handed down through generations in many European countries - is still very much alive in the region of Montpellier, France.

Here at Palavas-les-Flots the game originally performed on foot or on horseback has taken to the water. On the local canal the opponents mount platforms on narrow boats and enter into single combat, lance in hand and wooden shield slung from the shoulder.

The aim is to push the adversary from his boat into the water, and the "clinches" are most spectacular, ending in most cases in a heavy splash.

As in times of yore the broadest grins are on the faces of the spectators who enjoy the spectacle from a safe distance... and don't get wet.
