  • Description

Less than twenty-four hours after United States President Jimmy Carter returned home after bringing Israel and Egypt to the verge of signing a peace treaty, Palestinians throughout the Israeli-occupied West Bank of the river Jordan staged demonstrations against Egypt's approval of the peace proposals. In Ramallah -- as in other towns on the West Bank -- Israeli police and troops were called in to disperse the demonstrations.

SYNOPSIS: The demonstrators fear that with the signing of an Egyptian - Israeli peace treaty, the Israeli version of Palestinian self-rule on the West Bank may leave them with hardly any political power. Observers have taken Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begins remark on Wednesday (14 March) that there would be no border in the land of Israel, as a hint that Israel intends maintaining tight control over the West Bank. It is an area which Israeli nationalist right-wingers regard as part of their biblical heritage.

For their part the right-wingers fear the autonomy prescribed at last September's Camp David summit could lead to genuine Arab independence. There have been demands that the Israeli Government should disclose prior to the signing of a peace treaty just how much autonomy it intends granting to West Bankers. The question of West Bank autonomy was also one of the major obstacles during President Carter's peace mission. It has been resolved in Egyptian and Israeli eyes by arguing that the proposed peace treaty is only part of a framework for a comprehensive Middle East peace.
