  • Description

IN THE VERY EARLY HOURS OF YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) MORNING, AN AIRCRAFT FROM BRITAIN LANDED AT NAIROBI AIRPORT CARRYING 64 PEDIGREE ANIMALS. IT IS REPORTED TO BE "THE BIGGEST OPERATION OF ITS KIND EVER UNDERTAKEN ON BEHALF OF KENYA."
THE ANIMALS -- BULLS, HEIFERS, CALVES, SHEEP AND TWO THOROUGHBRED FILLIES -- WERE AIRLIFTED OUT OF BRITAIN BY UNITED LIVESTOCK EXPORTS FOR THE K.F.A., THE OFFICIAL AUCTIONEERS OF THE AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY OF KENYA, WHO HAVE ARRANGED FOR THE DELIVERIES OF THE ANIMALS TO THEIR NEW OWNERS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. SEVEN OF THE CATTLE ARE TO BE EXHIBITED AT THE BRITISH HIGH COMMISSION PAVILION AT THE NAIROBI SHOW WHICH OPENS NEXT TUESDAY (SEPTEMBER 30).

THE CHARTER AIRCRAFT WHICH WAS CARRYING THE ANIMALS WAS DUE TO ARRIVE ALMOST 20 HOURS EARLIER AND GREAT CONCERN HAD BEEN REGISTERED WHEN IT WAS OVER-DUE LATE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON WITHOUT ANY NEWS. IT FINALLY LANDED AT MIDNIGHT, AND THE ANIMALS WERE REPORTED AS BEING VERY NERVOUS BY THE LONG FLIGHT AND THE LIGHTS. THEY WERE ACCOMPANIED ON THE VOYAGE BY FOUR ANIMAL HANDLERS AND ONE VETERINARY SURGEON -- THE LATTER AS A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE BECAUSE OF THE PIONEERING NATURE OF THE "NOAH'S ARK" FLIGHT.
