    VOTERS FORMED LONG QUEUES OUTSIDE SOME POLLING STATIONS IN TANANARIVE, CAPITAL OF THE MALAGASY REPUBLIC, WHEN VOTING BEGAN IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS ON TUESDAY. THESE WERE THE FIRST ELECTIONS HELD IN THE FORMER FRENCH COLONY BY UNIVERSAL SUFFRAGE.

    THE ELECTION IS TO CHOOSE A PRESIDENT FOR THE NEXT SEVEN-YEAR TERM. SEEKING RE-ELECTION WAS PRESIDENT PHILIBERT TSIRANANA. HIS MAIN OPPONENT WAS DR. RASETA - LEADER OF THE FIPIMA PARTY IN THE MALAGASY NATIONAL ASSEMBLY. AN INDEPENDENT, M. ALFRED RAZAFIARISUA, WAS ALSO STANDING.

    WITH TWO-THIRDS OF THE VOTE NOW COUNTED, PRESIDENT TSIRANANA IS ASSURED OF VICTORY. HE HAS GAINED ALMOST 98 PER CENT OF THE VOTES CAST. HIS VOTES ARE ALREADY APPROACHING THE TWO MILLION MARK, WHILE MR. RASETA HAS LESS THAN 52,000. THE INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE HAS 807 TO HIS CREDIT.

    96 PER CENT OF THE ELECTORATE WENT TO THE POLLS IN THE DISTRICTS FOR WHICH COUNTS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED.
