    The United Arab Emirates Minister of Oil and Mineral Resources Manaa Said Oteiba appealed Monday (15 March) for the oil producing Arab nations to pay much more attention to refining their own oil instead of merely exporting their wealth straight from the oil wells.

    Opening the second Arab Petro-Chemical Conference in the Abu Dhabi Hilton he emphasised how important the Petro-Chemical industry is for the Arab World and called for the fullest co-operation and coordination to provide the appropriate climate for success.

    Minister Oteiba told delegates that the United Arab Emirates was laying down a comprehensive plan for petro-chemical and fertilizer industries which needed Arab cooperation. He hailed the Kuwaiti initiative in coordinating petro-chemical projects in the Arab world.

    The representative of the Arab League Nassar El Damanhouri also stressed the importance of the petro-chemical industry if the Arab world was fully to benefit from its oil wealth.

    SYNOPSIS: The second Arab Petro-Chemical conference opened on Monday in the United Arab Emirates capital, Abu Dhabi. The aim of the conference is to boost development and cooperation in the field of petro-chemicals throughout the Arab world.

    Manaa Said Oteiba, UAE Minister of Oil and Mineral Resources, inaugurating the conference appealed to the oil producing Arab nations to pay much more attention to refining their own oil rather than exporting their wealth straight from the oil wells. The Minister hailed Kuwaiti initiatives in coordinating petro-chemical projects throughout the Arab world. He said petro-chemicals were vital for the Arab nations and every effort should be made to create the climate for success.

    Minister Oteiba told of the UAE's comprehensive plans for petro-chemical and fertilizer industries and called for the fullest cooperation and coordination for all such plans. Delegates also heard an Arab League representative urge Arab nations to benefit from oil wealth through development of petro-chemicals.
