  • Description

IN LONDON TODAY (FRIDAY) NIGERIA'S FOREIGN MINISTER, DR. JAJA WACHUKU, SPOKE TO THE LONDON PRESS ABOUT HIS COUNTRY'S IMAGE.

HE SAID HE WAS DISTURBED BY THE PICTURE OF NIGERIA PRESENTED TO THE BRITISH PEOPLE BY THE BRITISH PRESS, RADIO AND TELEVISION AND HE HAD CALLED THE CONFERENCE TO HELP IMPROVE THE SITUATION.

"WE ARE QUITE MATURE IN NIGERIA AND WHENEVER WE HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WE RESOLVE THEM REALISTICALLY," HE SAID. PEOPLE IN NIGERIA DID NOT STAND OUT IN PUBLIC SQUARES AND ABUSE OTHER PEOPLE.

"WE FELT THAT THE NEXT THING AFTER POLITICAL INDEPENDENCE WAS TO GIVE THE INDEPENDENCE CONTENT. WE FELT THAT IF INDEPENDENCE WAS TO BE BENEFICIAL TO OUR PEOPLE WE HAD TO DEVELOP OUR ECONOMY," HE CONTINUED.

WHEN NIGERIA WAS STRONG IT WOULD BE IN A POSITION TO HELP OTHER AFRICAN COUNTRIES. NIGERIA HAD ALREADY STARTED TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO LESS FORTUNATE COUNTRIES. IT APPEARED THAT IN BRITAIN THESE THINGS WERE NOT UNDERSTOOD.

HE FELT THAT BECAUSE BRITAIN AND NIGERIA HAD WORKED TOGETHER FOR SO LONG THEY SHOULD UNDERSTAND ONE ANOTHER BETTER.

ON THE QUESTION OF SOUTHERN RHODESIA. DR. WACHUKU SAID THERE MUST BE A CONFERENCE OF LEADERS TO DISCUSS THE COUNTRY'S FUTURE. HE THOUGHT A LOOPHOLE WOULD BE FOUND, AND DID NOT TAKE WHAT MR. IAN SMITH (THE SOUTHERN RHODESIAN PRIME MINISTER) SAID AS THE LAST WORD.
