  • Description

DENMARK HAD A SHARP RETURN TO WINTER ON THURSDAY. PEOPLE AWOKE IN THE MORNING TO FIND THE COUNTRY BLANKETED UNDER SIX FEET (2 METRES) OF SNOW. IT WAS THE COLDEST APRIL WEATHER RECORDED IN DENMARK SINCE 1888.

ALL TRAFFIC IN THE CAPITAL, COPENHAGEN, WAS SEVERELY DELAYED BY THE SNOW. MANY PEOPLE WERE LATE FOR WORK. IT WASN'T ONLY THE PRIVATE MOTOR VEHICLES THAT GOT STUCK: SOME OF THE CITY BUSES FOUND IT DIFFICULT GOING TOO.

COPENHAGEN AIRPORT -- ONE OF EUROPE'S BUSIEST -- RAPIDLY TOOK ON AN APPEARANCE NOT UNLIKE THE ICE LANDING STRIPS USED IN THE ANTARCTIC. NEARLY ALL FLIGHTS WERE AFFECTED AS VISIBILITY DECLINED TO A DANGEROUS LEVEL.

DENMARK WAS ONE OF THE WORST HIT COUNTRIES ON A DAY WHEN FREAK WINTER STORMS SWEPT INTO LARGE AREAS OF EUROPE. HEAVY SNOWFALL WAS REPORTED FROM BELGIUM -- AND SOUTHERN BRITAIN HAD AN UNUSUALLY HEAVY FALL.
