  • Description

About 3,000 people, including soldiers in uniform, demonstrated outside the office of the Israeli Prime Minister, Mrs. Golda Meir, in Jerusalem on Sunday (17 February).

Most of the demonstrators called for the resignation of the Defence Minister, Moshe Dayan, but some urged him to ignore the call.

The anti-Dayan demonstration was in support of reserve Army Captain Mordechai Ashkenazy. Captain Ashkenazy commanded the only Israeli position on the Suez Canal's Bar-Lev Line that was not taken by the Egyptians during the October war. He's been staging a one man silent protest outside the Prime Minister's office for almost two weeks, calling for Mr. Dayan's resignation. He called for a petition of 101,000 signatures in support of his campaign, and said he would ask the 120 members of the Knesset (Parliament) not to support a government which included the Defence Minister.

The demonstrators broke up peacefully when their way to the Knesset building was blacked by riot police.
