  • Description

In Jakarta the Indonesian parliament met recently to pass a special bill allowing the former Portuguese colony of East Timor to be admitted into the Indonesian republic.

SYNOPSIS: Indonesia has incorporated the territory sooner than expected, with once-strong international opposition to the move apparently waning. East Timor provisional government representatives Mr. Arnoldo Reis and Mr. Gulerme Mario Gonzalves were in Jakarta to witness the adoption of East timor as the 27th Indonesian province. Last December Indonesian paratroopers supported by naval bombardment crushed a unilateral independence move in the territory spearheaded by the Fretilin left-wing nationalist group.

Minister of Home Affairs, General Amir Machmud, admitted East Timor on behalf of the Indonesian government. After 400 years, Portugal's control effectively ended last year, during the civil war in which Indonesia intervened. Several thousand Indonesian troops remained in the territory and a People's Assembly was hastily formed specifically to petition Indonesia to take over East Timor.
