Israel's Defence Minister, General Moshe Dayan, on Wednesday (2 August), visited the town of Gaza. The mayor of Israeli-occupied Gaza, Rashad Shawa, greeted General Dayan and the two men held informal talks.
The visit came as Egypt's President Anwar Sadat and Libya's leader, Colonel Gaddafi, signed an historic agreement to merge the two neighbouring states into one enormous nation. There has been no official reaction from Israeli sources.
General Dayan makes periodic visits to Israeli-occupied territories to inspect his security forces. In Gaza, the early occupation, was marked by frequent incidents of terrorism. But there have been no terrorist bombings there for over a year now.
Under the Israelis, roads have been improved, Gaza harbour extended and an industrial centre has been built up providing extra employment.
Israeli security forces in Gaza, on Wednesday, took extra precautions to guard against any incidents pending the arrival of Israeli Defence Minister, General Moshe Dayan.
The visit to Gaza by General Dayan was one of a series that he makes periodically in order to talk with officials in Israeli-occupied territory and inspect his security forces. His special motorcade and troop escort arrived at Gaza Town Hall, where the Israeli Defence Minister was greeted by Gaza's Mayor, Rashad Shawa.
The two men then held informal talks in the Town Hall. In the five-years of Israeli occupation, roads have been improved, Gaza harbour has been extended and an industrial centre has been built up. The early occupation was marked by frequent acts of terrorism. these have diminished, but Israeli troops and police still patrol the area.
While General Dayan was in Gaza, Libya and Egypt came to their historic agreement to merge the two neighbouring states. There has been no official reaction from Israel.
