Background: PRINCE EDWARD ISLANDERS AND TOURISTS JOIN IN WEEK-LONG ANNUAL FAIR INCLUDING ISLANDERS' FAVOURITE SPORT-HARNESS RACING
Every year thousands of people jam Charlottetown for the annual OLD HOME WEEK celebrations, held in mid-August. Charlottetown is the capital of Prince Edward Island and the birthplace of Confederation.

Visitors to the Island arrive by ferry -- and many prefer to go by the ABEGWEIT -- the world's most modern and powerful icebreaker specially built for year-round service. It can carry passengers (1,000), railway cars (19) and automobiles (150), on the 9-mile crossing from Cape Tormentine, New Brunswick on the mainland, across the Northumberland Strait to Borden, in Prince Edward Island.

Here, on this peaceful little island well-known for its beautiful beaches, its unhurried way of life, a large scale country fair is held annually -- parades, displays of provincial handicrafts, exhibits, craftsmen at work (our film footage includes a lady weaving and a well-known artist -Barry Budgen who now lives in Prince Edward Island at work on a canvas), the amusement park, judging of livestock, provide in opportunity for friends to meet and catch up with what has been going on in the Island since the last fair.

Charlottetown has one of the finest racing ovals in Eastern Canada for what is known as the provincial sport -- sulky racing. Some of the fastest pacers and trotters in the game come to the Island and the highlight of the summer racing schedule is the Old Home Week programme and features a full race card every afternoon and evening during the entire week.
