  • Description

In the area of Souk Arhas - about 40 kilometres from the Tunisian frontier on the Algerian side - 1600 rebels who had passed from Tunisia to Algeria have been captured by Legionnaire paratroopers under the command of Colonel Jean-Pierre.

About 600 were able to get back into Tunisia, through the Morisse lines, but some 630 were killed in the attempt. On the conclusion of the operation, prisoners buried the dead, and the paratroopers paraded through the streets of Bone.

But affairs in Algerian have taken a new turn, and one which faces France with her gravest crisis since the war. In Algiers defiant paratroop commanders seized power. In Paris a mob of 600C, led by Army officers and ex-paratroopers, tried to storm the National Assembly.

Algiers experienced a wild day of disorders, while General Pierre Massu set up an 11-strong Committee of Public Safety. French paratroopers occupied Algiers broadcasting station. Then General Raoul Salan, Commander in Chief Algeria, declared in a broadcast; "I have provisionally taken into my hands the destinies of French Algeria."
