    SOME 10,000 INDIAN PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS STAGED A 2 1/2-MILE PROTEST MARCH IN NEW DELHI ON MONDAY (NOV 11). THEY WERE DEMANDING FOR A NATIONAL PAY SCALE OF RUPEES 150-300 (ABOUT GBP7-GBP14) PLUS ALLOWANCES AT GOVERNMENT RATES AS RECOMMENDED BY A SALARIES COMMISSION.

    THE PROTEST MARCH WAS ORGANISED BY THE ALL-INDIA TEACHERS FEDERATION.

    THE TEACHERS CAME FROM ALL PARTS OF THE COUNTRY AND THEY INCLUDED A LARGE NUMBER OF WOMEN.

    POLICE STOOD BY AS THEY ASSEMBLED OPPOSITE THE OFFICE OF PRIME MINISTER MRS. INDIRA GHANDI. A RALLY WAS HELD TO PROTEST AGAINST THE TEACHERS' SERVICE CONDITIONS.

    THEIR OTHER DEMANDS INCLUDE VOTING RIGHTS FOR PRIMARY TEACHERS' CONSTITUENCIES, UNIFORM SERVICE CONDITIONS AND THE APPOINTMENT OF A WAGE BOARD TO FIX THEIR SALARIES FROM TIME TO TIME.
