  • Description

Some 70 Africans were reported killed Sept 14 at Manono - a large tin mining town in North Katanga -after a pitched 24-hour battle between African tribesmen, said to be under the influence of drugs, and Katanga gendarmes. About 160 refugees from the area were flown to Elisabethville the same day. One DC-3 aircraft, normally carrying 33 passengers, was thought to have made aviation history when it arrived at the airport with 980 people on board.

Swedish troops of the United Nations were immediately flown to Manono to reinforce the Irish 33rd Battalion who were guarding the town's 70 Europeans. Most of the white people were employees of Geomines, the second largest mining company in Katanga.

According to reports, the tribesmen - believed to be Baluba supporters of Mr Lumumba - were given charms by a witchdoctor who said they would protect them from death. They then took a local drug and "began to attack everyone".

The Katanga Government asked the United Nation for permission to fly reinforcements of gendarmery to Manono but the request was refused. Mr Ian Berendson, the United Nations political officer in Elisabethville, said: "I had to reply to the request in the terms of our general instructions about the use of airfields."
