  • Description

SOME 600 STUDENTS AND UNIONISTS LAST WEEK (8 MARCH) DEMONSTRATED IN MANILA AGAINST FILIPINO INVOLVEMENT IN VIETNAM. THE PHILIPPINES HAS A 2,000-MAN CIVIL ACTION GROUP IN SOUTH VIETNAM AND THE DEMONSTRATORS CLAIM THEY SHOULD BE RECALLED.

PLACARDS, CARRIED BY THE DEMONSTRATORS, READ "WE WANT PEACE ... NOT WAR" AND "LET ASIANS SOLVE ASIAN PROBLEM".

SPEAKERS AT THE RALLY, WHICH FOLLOWED A MARCH THROUGH THE CITY STREETS, URGED THE RECALL OF THE ENGINEER CONTINGENT AND ITS SECURITY SUPPORT, BASED IN TAY NINH, NORTHWEST OF SAIGON, NEAR THE CAMBODIAN BORDER.

A BILL TO APPROPRIATE 35 MILLION PESOS (ABOUT 3.5 MILLION POUNDS STERLING) TO FINANCE THE CONTINGENT FOR ANOTHER YEAR, IS AT PRESENT BEING DEBATED IN THE PHILIPPINES CONGRESS. THE BILL, WHICH HAS ALREADY BEEN PASSED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, IS CAUSING BITTER DEBATE IN CONGRESS.

PRESIDENT FERDINAND MARCOS WANTS CONGRESS TO RUSH THE BILL THROUGH, AS FUNDS AVAILABLE WILL ONLY KEEP THE CONTINGENT IN OPERATION UNTIL THE END OF MARCH.
