  • Description

Typhoon Rita -- the second typhoon to hit Japan in a week -- left at least 22 people dead, six missing and some 16,000 people homeless after cutting a swathe across western and northern Japan on Saturday (23 August).

As the typhoon moved away into the Pacific Ocean on Sunday (24 August), it was downgraded to a tropical storm and then a depression.

The typhoon set off land slides and floods which claimed many of the victims. In Japan's northern most island of Hokkaido, the bodies of three people were recovered after one landslide buried eight people alive. Two were rescued and three others were still missing.

Last week Typhoon Phyllis caused at least 75 deaths and damage estimated at 61 million pounds sterling (125 million U.S. dollars).

Typhoon Rita first hit Japan early on Saturday (23 August), creating winds of up to 90 miles an hour (140 kilometres per hour), and crippling sea, rail and air services.

Thousands of people were evacuated from villages and the Japanese Government estimated the total cost of the latest disaster at 39,500 billion yen (61 million pounds sterling).
