  • Description

Representatives from neighbouring states are in Libreville, capital of Gabon for celebrations marking the tenth anniversary of the founding of the country's one political party -- the Gabonese Democratic Party.

SYNOPSIS: One of the first delegations to arrive last Thursday (9 March) was from the Congo People's Republic. It was led by Vice-President Major Denis Sassou-Mguesso. The Gabonese Prime Minister, M. Leon Mebiame was at the airport to welcome the visitors on behalf of the Government. The celebrations in the capital are due to last for more than a week. It was on March 12, 1968 that President Omar ??? announced formally that Gabon was to have a one-party government. At the same time he announced the creation of a new party, the Gabonese Democratic Party (the PDG).

The PDG was given the motto "Dialogue...Tolerance....Peace", and its aims were to guarantee national unity and to abolish ethnic discrimination. Since then, the PDG under President ??? leadership has held an increasingly dominant place in ??? political life. Gabon has diplomatic relations with all its immediate neighbours and together with the Cargo People's Republic, Cameroon and the Central African empire, makes up the Central African Economic Union. Gabon has special interests with the Congo Republic in transport as well. Together they are forging a network of road and rail services....a partnership recognised in the celebrations in Libreville this week.
