  • Description

Leaflets have been issued in the name of the former EOKA leader General Grivas in Nicosia calling on Greek cypriots to resume the struggle for Enosis (union with Greece). The leaflets were delivered by mail to foreign correspondents. They appealed to the youth of Cyprus to ignore the Government of Archbishop Makarios, which was described as faint-hearted, and continue the struggle of the EOKA dead. Some newspapers in Cyprus have doubted the authenticity of General Grivas' name at the bottom of the leaflets. Rumours have swept the island recently that the General had returned from Athens where he was last seen in August.

SYNOPSIS: Cyprus, which for more than a month has buzzed with rumours of the return of former EOKA leader, General George Grivas, had even more to talk about following the release of leaflets allegedly written by the General. Opinions were varied on the authenticity of the leaflets. Some newspapers in Nicosia said they were definitely written by General Grivas, others said they were not. The leaflets called on the youth of Cyprus to ignore the Government of Archbishop Makarios and continue the struggle for Enosis... union with Greece.

The leaflets were sent to local newspapers and foreign correspondents in Nicosia. General Grivas's name was typed at the bottom.
