Background: THE ELEVENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE EOKA UPRISING AGAINST BRITISH RULE IN CYPRUS WAS CELEBRATED YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) WITH A MILITARY PARADE. PRESIDENT MAKARIOS AND GENERAL GRIVAS, THE COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF CYPRUS, TOOK THE SALUTE.

THERE WERE RIVAL SHOUTS OF SUPPORT AS THE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL LEFT THE SALUTING BASE AFTER THE PARADE. ONE GROUP CHANTED: "ENOSIS" (UNION WITH GREECE) AND "DIGHENIS", THE NAME THE GENERAL USED DURING THE UPRISING. THE OTHER GROUP, A LARGER ONE, IMMEDIATELY SHOUTED FOR THE PRESIDENT.

THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS AS SOME 30,000 PEOPLE WATCHED THE PARADE. FIVE-THOUSAND GREEK-CYPRIOT CONSCRIPTS MARCHED PAST WITH RUSSIAN TANKS AND GUNS, AND A COLLECTION OF BRITISH WORLD WAR TWO EQUIPMENT. THE BRITISH EQUIPMENT WAS SUPPLIED BY EGYPT AFTER THE INTER-COMMUNAL HOSTILITIES STARTED ON THE ISLAND IN DECEMBER 1963.

REPRESENTATIVES OF THE UNITED NATIONS WATCHING THE PARADE WILL SOON BE SHORT OF THE IRISH CONTINGENT. THE 518 IRISH TROOPS IN THE PEACE FORCE ARE BEING WITHDRAWN BECAUSE OF U.N. DEBTS. THE IRISH DEPARTURE WILL REDUCE THE STRENGTH OF THE FORCE TO 4,323 MEN. THE U.N. CYPRUS DEBT NOW TOTALS NEARLY GBP2 1/2 MILLION.
