  • Description

THE JORDANIAN GOVERNMENT PLANS TO RESTORE ROMAN AMPHITHEATRES AT JARASH AND PETRA SO THEY MAY BE USED ONCE AGAIN FOR SPORTING TOURNAMENT AND DISPLAYS OF THE ARTS.
THE ROMANS LEFT BEHIND 13 AMPHITHEATRES IN JORDAN BUT MANY OF THEM TODAY ARE HARDLY RECOGNISABLE. THE MOST COMPLETE ARE AT THE JORDANIAN CAPITAL, AMMAN, AND AT JARASY AND PETRA.
THE AMMAN ARENA ALREADY HAS BEEN RESTORED AND HAS BEEN USED FOR OFFICIAL CEREMONIES, ART SHOWS, A TABLE TENNIS CONTEST AND, RECENTLY, FOR A SHOW OF RUSSIAN FOLKLORE DANCING. ITS' THE BIGGEST AMPHITHEATRE IN JORDAN AND CAN HOLD 10,000 PEOPLE.
JARASH AMPHITHEATRE, LIKE AMMAN'S, IS PURE ROMAN BUT THAT AT PETRA IS ROMAN ONLY IN SHAPE. IT WAS BUILT BY THE NABATIANS -- ARAB TRIBES WHO APPEARED IN THE SIXTH CENTURY B.C. AND FELL UNDER ROMAN CONTROL IN 106 A.D.
THE NABATIANS CARVED THE PETRA AMPHITHEATRE FROM ROCK AS THEY DID FOR THEIR HOUSES, TEMPLES AND STREETS.
WHEN THEY ARE RESTORED, THE JARASH AND PETRA AMPHITHEATRES ALSO WILL BE USED FOR ART SHOWS, DANCING AND SPORTING CONTESTS.
