AS U.S. MILITARY CHIEFS FORECAST THAT HEAVIER FIGHTING IS YET TO COME, SAIGON TODAY (THURSDAY)?

  • Description

AS U.S. MILITARY CHIEFS FORECAST THAT HEAVIER FIGHTING IS YET TO COME, SAIGON TODAY (THURSDAY) WAS STILL REELING FROM YESTERDAY'S SAVAGE ATTACKS BY VIET CONG 'SUICIDE SQUADS' CLIMAXED BY AN ATTACK ON THE U.S. EMBASSY. THE VIET CONG ATTACKED THE EMBASSY IN PRE-DAWN DARKNESS AND OCCUPIED THE COMPOUND FOR SOME SIX HOURS BEFORE BEING DRIVEN OUT BY COUNTER ATTACKS.

TONIGHT FIGHTING IS STILL GOING ON AS U.S., SOUTH VIETNAMESE AND AUSTRALIAN TROOPS CONTINUE THEIR EFFORTS TO DRIVE THE VIET CONG OUT OF THE CAPITAL. SAIGON IS NOW UNDER MARTIAL LAW AND A 24-HOUR CURFEW, AND IS BEING BOMBED BY ITS OWN AIRCRAFT.

THE AMERICANS CLAIM THAT ALMOST 5,000 VIET CONG HAVE DIED IN THE OFFENSIVE, WHILE THEIR OWN AND THEIR ALLIES' CASUALTIES ARE HIGH. MANY CIVILIAN HAVE ALSO DIED OR BEEN INJURED.

IN YESTERDAY'S ATTACK ON THE U.S. EMBASSY, TROOPS AND C.I.A. (CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY) MEN FOUGHT A BITTER BATTLE AGAINST THE VIET CONG WHO AT ONE STAGE WERE REPORTED TO HAVE HELD FIVE FLOORS OF THE SIX-STOREY BUILDING. THREE HUNDRED VIET CONG WERE SAID TO HAVE TAKEN PART IN THE 'SUICIDE' ATTACK. NINETEEN BODIES WERE FOUND.

THE VIETCONG HAD APPARENTLY SLIPPED INTO THE EMBASSY GROUND UNNOTICED AFTER BLASTING A HOLE IN THE OUTER WALL. THEY WERE DRIVEN OUT EVENTUALLY WHEN U.S. PARATROOPERS LANDED ON THE EMBASSY ROOF BY HELICOPTER AND FOUGHT THEIR WAY DOWN TO MEET THE MEN FIGHTING THEIR WAY IN FROM THE GROUND.

ONE INCIDENT OF THE FIGHTING--A RETIRED U.S. ARMY COLONEL, NOW A CHIEF AID TO THE U.S. AMBASSADOR, FOUND HIMSELF ARMED ONLY WITH A HAND-GRENADE AND UNDER ATTACK. A PISTOL WAS THROWN THROUGH A WINDOW TO HIM, AND HE KILLED A VIET CONG FIRING AT HIM WITH AN M.16 RIFLE.

NORTHWEST OF THE CAPITAL THERE WAS MORE FIERCE FIGHTING AROUND TAN SON NHUT AIRPORT, WHERE VIET CONG HELD OUT AGAINST AIR AND GROUND ATTACKS, SNIPING AT AIRCRAFT.

TONIGHT PRESIDENT JOHNSON SAID THERE WOULD BE NO LET-UP TO U.S. BOMBING OF THE NORTH UNLESS THE NORTH VIETNAMESE INDICATED THAT WOULD BE NO INCREASE OF 'TERRORISM AND AGGRESSION'.
