  • Description

COMMANDER JACQUES YVES COUSTEAU RETURNED TO MARSEILLES YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) AFTER LEADING AN UNDERWATER EXPLORATION EXPEDITION IN THE RED SEA AND THE GULF OF ADEN.

HE RETURNED WITH THE SURVEY VESSEL "CALYPSO" AND THE FREIGHTER ROSALDO CARRYING UNDERWATER HOUSES AND OTHER EQUIPMENT USED IN THE EXPEDITION. THE CONQUEST OF THE CONTINENTAL SHELF HAD BEGUN, THE COMMANDER SAID.

FOR 29 DAYS FIVE MEN OF HIS TEAM LIVED IN A FIVE - ROOM "HOUSE" AT A DEPTH OF NEARLY 40 FEET (12.5 METRES) OFF PORT SUDAN. THEY CAME UP APPARENTLY FAR LESS TIRED THAN THEIR COMRADES ON THE SURFACE.

BELOW THEM, ABOUT 85 FEET (26.5 METRES) DOWN, TWO DIVERS STAYED FOR A WEEK IN A SMALLER SHELL AND SAID THEY HAD BREATHED MORE EASILY THAN ON SHORE. COMMANDER COUSTEAU FORECAST THAT A 1964 EXPEDITION HE PLANNED WOULD GO DEEPER AND WOULD STAY LONGER UNDER THE WATER.

THE "CALYPSO" LEFT NICE AT THE END OF FEBRUARY WITH A TWO FOLD MISSION. IT WAS TO STUDY RED SEA AND INDIAN OCEAN REEFS AND SET UP TWO UNDERWATER VILLAGES.
