  • Description

TWELVE YOUTHS RANGING IN AGE FROM 12 TO 17 ARE CARVING THEIR OWN FUTURE FROM THE FOREST IN SOUTHERN TANZANIA. IN LITTLE OVER A YEAR THEY HAVE PUT UP HUTS, PLANTED VEGETABLES AND CROPS, BEGUN A POULTRY FARM... AND NOW THEY ARE SELF-SUPPORTING.

THE BOYS HOPE TO GET ANOTHER 13 TO GO IN WITH THEM TO EXPAND THEIR VILLAGE TO COVER 500 ACRES.

THEY OVERCAME CONSIDERABLE DIFFICULTIES IN STARTING THEIR OJAMAA ("LET'S GO TOGETHER") VILLAGE.

THERE ARE MANY OF THESE COMMUNITIES, SELF-SUPPORTING OJAMAA VILLAGES IN TANZANIA, BUT ALMOST ALL OF THEM ARE RUN BY ADULTS. MANY DOUBTED THAT YOUTHS JUST OUT OF SCHOOL COULD RUN THEIR OWN VILLAGE.

BUT THESE TWELVE BOYS, WHO HAD NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET JOBS IN THE TOWNS AFTER FINISHING SCHOOL, DECIDED TO TRY.

IN JULY 1968 THEY BEGAN BUILDING THEMSELVES A HUT SOME 25 MILES FROM THE TOWN OF SONGEA AND CLEARING THE FOREST.

DESPITE LONELINESS, HUNGER, THE LACK OF PROPER TOOLS, AND EVEN BEING CUT OFF BY SOME OF THEIR PARENTS, THE BOYS KEPT WORKING.

MISSIONARIES HELPED THEM BY GIVING THEM TOOLS AND LIVESTOCK.

IN THE LAST SEASON THE BOYS CULTIVATED A TOTAL OF 11 ACRES WITH CROPS SUCH A SOYA BEANS, MAIZE, VEGETABLES AND FRUIT..... THEY ALSO SOLD EGGS AND FIREWOOD.

THEIR INCOME IS USED TO MEET VARIOUS NEEDS OF THE VILLAGE AND THE REST IS SHARED AMONG THE INDIVIDUALS FOR SUCH ITEMS AS SHOES, CLOTHES AND BED CLOTHING.

THEY PLAN TO INCREASE THE SIZE AND YIELD OF THEIR FARM-VILLAGE EACH YEAR AND MAKE IT THE FOUNDATION OF THEIR FUTURES.
