    IN BELGIUM, WORK IS GOING AHEAD ON THE LONG-AWAITED VEHICULAR TUNNEL UNDER THE RIVER SCHELDT IN ANTWERP, TO CARRY TRAFFIC ON THE MOTORWAY E.3. FROM LISBON IN PORTUGAL TO STOCKHOLM IN SWEDEN. IT WILL EVENTUALLY FORM PART OF THE "KLEINE RING", A NETWORK OF MOTORWAYS AROUND THE CITY.

    THE TUNNEL, WHEN COMPLETED, WILL CONSIST OF FOUR TUBES EACH 690 MILES (2,264 FEET) IN LENGTH. TWO WILL CARRY VEHICULAR TRAFFIC, ONE IN EACH DIRECTION; ONE TUBE WILL CARRY CYCLISTS AND MOTORCYCLISTS, AND THE THIRD WILL CARRY TRAINS.

    THE SECTION OF THE TUNNEL WHICH WILL RUN UNDERNEATH THE RIVER SCHELDT WILL BE 510 METRES (1,673 FEET) LONG. IT IS BEGIN BUILT IN FIVE PRE-FABRICATED SECTIONS IN A DRY-DOCK NEARBY, AND THE SECTIONS ARE FITTED INTO A GROOVE DREDGED OUT OF THE RIVER BED.
