    Background: President Albert Bongo of the Gabonese Republic attended an Extraordinary Congress of the ruling Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG) on Thursday (18 January).

    Some two hundred delegates from all over the country gathered in Libreville for the Congress, designed to 'put statutes in harmony with the orientation and position that the Secretary General of the Party (President Bongo) intends to give the party and the political bureau'.

    At the opening of the Congress, President Bongo said that today Gabon's Democratic Party believes reality, independence and genuineness must govern the formation of policies.

    On Foreign Policy, the President said Gabon will continue to cooperate with its old friends who have 'given Gabon proof of their friendship without wanting to alienate its independence'.

    SYNOPSIS: President Albert Bongo of the Gabonese Republic attended an Extraordinary Congress of the ruling Gabonese Democratic Party in Libreville last week. The President, who is Secretary-General of the party, was greeted by dancers in the party's headquarters. The Extraordinary Congress was said to have been called to make statutes in harmony with the reconstruction President Bongo intends to make within the party. President Bongo told the 200 delegates that the Gabonese Democratic Party believes reality, independence and genuineness must govern the formation of policies.

    Delegates were also addressed by a representative for the liberation movement of the Portuguese islands off the Gabonese coast.

    On foreign policy, President Bongo said Gabon will continue to cooperate with countries who have given proof of their friendship without wanting to alienate the country's independence.
