JUST ONE LAST QUESTION. WHAT WAS MIKE QUILL'S REACTION ON HIS IMPRISONMENT IN THE BELLEVUE HOSPITAL WHEN YOU TOLD HIM ABOUT THIS?

MACMAHON: WELL, HE CONGRATULATED ALL OF US AND TOLD US TO TELL THE EXECUTIVE BOARD WHICH TOOK THE VOTE THAT IT WAS THE BEST PACKAGE DEAL WE EVER NEGOTIATED."

Background: THE NEW YORK TRANSPORT STRIKE IS OVER. IT ENDED EARLY TODAY (THURSDAY) AND BY MIDDAY THE CITY'S BUSES AND SUBWAY (UNDERGROUND RAIL SYSTEM) WERE ALMOST BACK TO NORMAL. THE STRIKE HAD CRIPPLED NEW YORK FOR 13 DAYS, AND COST HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN LOST BUSINESS.

BOTH SIDES IN THE DISPUTE ACCEPTED A PEACE PLAN UNDER WHICH THE UNION RECEIVES A TWO YEAR PACKAGE DEAL, WITH THE PROMISE OF MORE NEGOTIATIONS THEN. THE PEACE PLAN WILL COST 70-MILLION DOLLARS (GBP25-MILLION STERLING) A YEAR.

WITH THE SETTLEMENT CAME THE ORDER FOR THE RELEASE OF NINE UNION OFFICIALS DETAINED IN PRISON FOR DISOBEYING COURT ORDERS. ONE, THE LEADER OF THE UNION, MR MICHAEL QUILL, IS RECOVERING IN BELLEVUE HOSPITAL FROM A HEART ATTACK HE SUFFERED AFTER HIS ARREST A FEW DAYS AGO.

UNION OFFICIALS HAVE EXPRESSED THEIR SATISFACTION WITH THE NEW TWO YEAR AGREEMENT AND THE IMMEDIATE BENEFITS.
